How the fuel cost is calculated
Fuel used = distance ÷ fuel economy (or distance × L/100km ÷ 100). Fuel cost = fuel used × price per unit. The calculator converts everything to litres internally, so you can mix units – for example a UK car rated in imperial MPG on a trip measured in kilometres.
1 US gallon = 3.785 litres, 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.546 litres. That is why the same car shows a higher MPG figure in the UK than in the US.

FAQ
- Is US MPG the same as UK MPG?
- No. A UK gallon is about 20% larger, so 30 MPG (UK) equals about 25 MPG (US). Pick the right unit in the calculator.
- How do I convert L/100km to MPG?
- MPG (US) = 235.21 ÷ L/100km. MPG (UK) = 282.48 ÷ L/100km.
- Why is my real trip cost higher?
- Official economy ratings are measured in test cycles. Motorway speed, cold weather, roof boxes and heavy loads usually increase consumption.
